Roadside Inspection Forms Returned Only When the Issuing State Requests Them

Completed roadside inspection forms must now be returned to the issuing State only when that State requests their return. Correction, certification, and retention responsibilities remain.

What Changed: FMCSA revised the federal requirement that motor carriers and intermodal equipment providers return completed roadside inspection forms to the issuing State. Current Status: Effective July 22, 2026, the completed form is returned only when the issuing State requests it. The change does not eliminate the responsibility to correct listed violations, complete or certify the form as required, and retain a copy for 12 months.

Who May Be Affected

Motor carriers, intermodal equipment providers, drivers, maintenance personnel, and staff responsible for roadside inspection records.

What Drivers / Owner-Operators Should Do Now

Determine whether the issuing State requests the completed form. Correct documented violations, complete the required certification, return the form when requested, and retain a copy for 12 months. Do not assume that every State follows the same return procedure.
