Predatory Towing Documentation Kit

Organize tow authorization, scene details, equipment condition, rates, services, invoices, storage, release, payment, complaints, and follow-up records after a commercial vehicle tow or immobilization.

Your entries stay in this browser session. This public kit does not save, upload, or send the information you enter. Print the current kit or save it as a PDF before refreshing, closing, or leaving the page. Protect sensitive equipment, cargo, payment, personal, claim, and contact information.

Safety and lawful operations come first. Do not obstruct law enforcement, traffic control, emergency response, recovery, towing, or storage personnel. Document only from a safe location and follow the instructions of authorized officials. This kit does not tell a driver to refuse a lawful tow, withhold payment, enter private property, or confront anyone.

Documentation tool — not a legal finding. The title describes a common industry concern. Completing this kit does not determine that a towing company, fee, tow, hold, lien, storage charge, or release practice is predatory, illegal, deceptive, excessive, unnecessary, or unauthorized. Towing rules vary significantly by state, locality, tow type, property, contract, law-enforcement order, and the facts of the event.

Federal scope matters. FMCSA has documented concerns about hidden, misleading, unnecessary, and excessive commercial towing fees. The FTC final Rule on Unfair or Deceptive Fees effective May 12, 2025 is limited to live-event tickets and short-term lodging, so do not assume that rule governs a commercial towing dispute. Verify current state and local law and the correct complaint or hearing process.

1

Document the event as it happens

Capture tow authorization, scene details, equipment condition, and timeline before memories fade or vehicles move.

2

Review rates, fees, and invoices line by line

Compare each charge against disclosed rates, estimates, contracts, and law-enforcement rotation information without making a legal conclusion.

3

Track release, payment, and communications

Record release requests, access issues, payment demands, receipts, complaint references, and next actions in one place.
